Life is but the journey, not the destination: Matagalpa, Nicaragua

Traveling saved my life – it really did, it gave me a purpose and take it from someone who has had a plan since very little. I envisioned my entire life and it got so boring living based on a plan. It was great having goals set and meeting them, but traveling made me live. Actual living like right now for example, I’m waiting for a bus to drive me back to a small town where I am staying in Nicaragua. I’m surrounded at a bus stop by hundreds of people who do this everyday. They travel for work, travel to another city, but they all do it for a purpose – so I guess, yeah, it did give me one too.
Every travel changes something in me or introduces me to a part of myself I didn’t know existed. I’ve never been shy to jump into the unknown, but now I don’t really hold back as I used to with restrictions. I just do.
If you’re planning to go anywhere this year, but you’re not sure if you should, I’ve come up with a list of things traveling has given me that I didn’t have before:
Open Minded
I was a little narrow-minded before, even though I don’t like to admit it, I was. Now, I’m more open to different, or as I like to put it: you are you and I am me, and It’s okay.
Education
Most people think that education is only provided in a classroom, but it’s not. I’ve learned far more about people and culture stepping out of my comfort zone. Right now, I’m sitting on the bus on my way back to the town people watching, and this alone allows me to understand the mechanism of this society. I know most of these folks work not for luxury, but to have enough to put on their table day-to-day, and that’s enough for them.
Introduction to a better YOU
I thought I knew what I wanted before traveling, but it honestly changes with every city I visit. I add more to what I want. I meet different aspects of myself. This may sound bizarre, but traveling alone has waken me up to my surroundings in a different perspective, and most of the time it helps me better understand my weaknesses and how I can better them.
Adventure
I could be wrong, but I think the worse thing that can happen to anyone is getting stranded. If you’re single, you have no excuse to explore. If you’re in a relationship, I believe it adds more to this bond when you explore parts of the world together. Take it from experience.
Lastly, the character in YOU
There’s never a time that I don’t get asked if I get scared to travel alone. Truth is I do sometimes. It’s nice to share these experiences with people like friends, family, or a special someone, but in case you can’t, don’t hold back because of fear. I take major satisfaction when I know I am enjoying life. I’d be scared to look back and know I didn’t pursue things that I wanted to do because of fear. Take it from someone with a tendency to get anxious. There are times I’ve gone on trips and I go straight to the hotel room, and won’t go out until the next day, but I do, do it.
I have a feeling 2017 is going to be one we won’t ever forget. I hope through my adventures you build the courage to pack and go.
I know I took some time off, but my source of inspiration was not in me, and I feel terrible I allowed that lack of motivation take the best of me, but I am here. I survived 2016, just like you. Now let’s travel.
